Dodge Diplomat Maintenance 101
Classic Dodge cars of the 1980s like your Diplomat need regular maintenance, if they're to stay in top shape -- something that's pretty straightforward, provided you know a thing or two about what to do and when to do it. Here are a few basic pointers. Stay on top of them, and the car should run long down the road.
When to Change the Air Filters
Are the filter fibers clogged, discolored, or damaged? Is the Check Engine light on the dash lit? Maybe you're having trouble accelerating, fuel economy is worsening, black smoke's coming from the exhaust, and the interior smells dirty or stale. These are all signs of bad air filters; replace them ASAP. Otherwise, take care of the job every 12,000 to 15,000 miles.
When to Replace the Spark Plugs
Spark plugs get changed every 18,000 to 100,000 miles, depending on type. Otherwise, you do so when you see the signs that they're faulty: when the plug leads starting to corrode or widen excessively, when they stop conducting electricity as well, when the engine starts misfiring or failing, or the worst-case scenario, when they break. Broken spark plugs should be replaced ASAP; they can end up severely damaging the engine cylinders otherwise.
When the Serpentine Belt Should be Changed
Inspect the serpentine belt it every 50,000 to 100,000 miles. If it's in good shape but needs tightening, tighten it. Otherwise, replace it when you see the signs it's failing. They include cracking, fraying, or glazing, squealing or chirping noises (which can mean slippage), and the belt having contacted coolant, oil, or power steering fluid (which damage it). Other symptoms include a lit Check Engine light on the dash, loss of power steering control, AC malfunctions, a drained or dead battery, engine overheats and stalls, and accessories damage.
