Air Filters 101

How Many There are

Most cars, trucks, SUVs, and vans have two. One is an engine air filter. The other is a cabin air filter.

What They Do

Both capture infiltrates. The engine filter helps keep them from depositing on the vehicle's engine parts. The cabin filter helps keep them from accumulating in the heating and air conditioning systems.

What They're Made of

Usually, either synthetic paper, metal, foam, or cotton. Materials are often either flat, circular, or cylindrical in design. They're sometimes washable and reusable also.

Signs You Should Replace Them

No material is permanent; you will need to change both kinds of filters eventually. The symptoms that it's time to do so are as follows.

  • Clogs and obstructed airflow
  • Damaged or worn filter media
  • Check Engine and other warnings on the dash
  • Worsening gas mileage
  • Engine misfires
  • Engine power loss
  • Acceleration problems
  • Black smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe
  • Whistling or other abnormal sounds coming from the cabin's vents
  • A stale or dirty odor on the interior

See these, and you should inspect both filters and change them accordingly.

When to Change Them Otherwise

Take care of the job annually, meaning every 12,000 miles at least, and at most, every 15,000 miles. Be sure to review your owner's manual to get further info on what to do; it'll have an air filter maintenance schedule you can check out.

How to Install New Ones

That depends on what your owner's documentation and/or manufacturer's instructions say to do. Generally, though, you should do the following.

Installing an Engine Air Filter

  1. Pop your vehicle's hood and locate the engine air filter housing on the top or side of its engine. It'll have a hose attached.
  2. Open the housing. You'll need the right tool for the fasteners the housing uses -- something to remove either screws, clamps, wing nuts, or clips. Take them off, take off the top of the housing, and remove the old air filter, taking care not to damage any wiring harness or other electrical components attached to the former. You may choose to (and should) wipe any dirt or debris out of the housing.
  3. Put the new engine air filter in the housing and seat it correctly, with its rubber rim facing up.
  4. Replace the top of the housing and put the fasteners back in.

Putting in a Cabin Air Filter

  1. Open your vehicle's glove compartment, locate the pin and screw on its outside edge, and using a screwdriver, remove and save the screw. Then, remove and save the pin. You may have to release a band that holds the glove compartment in place also.
  2. Gently press both sides of the glove compartment to lower it, and locate the cabin filter cover behind it. Release the cover by squeezing the tabs on either side of it. Remove the cover.
  3. The cabin filter should be behind the cover. Remove the filter.
  4. Clean the filter housing, in which the filter was installed.
  5. Install the new cabin filter.
  6. Snap the filter cover back into place.
  7. Return the glove compartment to its original position, replace the pin and/or band, and replace the screw.
  8. Close the glove compartment.

Before you buy new ones in either case, though, be sure you're getting the genuine article.

Why Buy Genuine OEM Air Filters vs. Aftermarket?

Mopar designs them compatible with your brand and model specifically. Off-brands don't always do this -- and even if they claim to, their filters may not fit your vehicle as well as advertised.

Where to Buy Genuine Mopar Air Filters

If it's not in stock, though, and it needs to be ordered from your brand, it can take 2 to 6 business days minimum (usually fewer than that). Secondly, we offer overnight shipping for qualifying orders. Our returns and cancellations policies are just as straightforward: should you need to return an air filter or cancel your order altogether before it ships, it's no problem; just contact us to start the process.
