Three Basic Upgrades to Modernize a Dodge Aries Fast

If you drove a mid-size Dodge car in the 1980s, there's a good chance it was an Aries. Sportier and more upscale than its Plymouth Reliant sibling, it was a pleasure to drive. If you've bought one used, though, it probably needs updating.

1. Engine

Aries offered a choice among 2.2- and 2.5-liter, in-line, four-cylinder engines and a 2.6-liter inline-four made by Mitsubishi, all of which were naturally aspirated and, by today's standards, somewhat underpowered. Put in a turbocharger, a cold air intake, a performance air filter, and a custom exhaust. Together, they'll enrich the engine's air-to-fuel ratio and relieve backpressure, the result being a little more power and higher efficiency than you'd get from stock.

2. Interior

3. Exterior

Today, the wood-tone body panels that Aries had might seem a little old-fashioned, to say nothing of the flat Dodge badge on the hood, the grille (even the blacked-out option you could get), or the chrome taillight trim.
