Four Mods to Take Your Chrysler Laser to the Next Level
Your Laser is a classic Chrysler sports car of the 1980s -- a real head-turner as style was concerned, relatively fuel efficient for a three-door hatchback geared for performance, and definitely as fun to drive as one. Although it's certainly a tad more luxurious than its Dodge Daytona sibling, the 2.2- and 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engines in its base and XE trims never got above 146 horsepower. If you're looking to upgrade that spec, there are four easy mods you can do.
1. Install a turbocharger or upgrade to a supercharger.
A naturally aspirated engine like that in base Laser can only pull so much air into its combustion chamber. A turbo can draw a lot more (to say nothing of upgrading turbos like those in XE to superchargers). Put simply, more air can mean a big bump in horsepower and torque.
2. Replace the stock air intake with a cold air intake.
This means relocating your regular air intake to near a fender, for instance, or above a wheel well. This'll enable it to pull denser, cooler, freer-flowing (in other words, higher-quality) air into the engine for combustion.
3. Swap out the factory engine air filter for a performance air filter.
A regular air filter will remove pollutants as air enters the engine, but a performance engine filter will also optimize airflow, thereby helping enrich the air-to-fuel ratio, which enhances combustion and helps generate more power in turn.
4. Update the exhaust.
This is critical to more and better airflow, as it opens the exhaust pipe. However, it comes with an added benefit: it can also give your Laser a more aggressive note -- one that's sure to get attention.
