OEM MOPAR Air Cleaner Assemblies Online

Air Cleaner Assemblies 101

What One Does

It helps prevent airborne contaminants infiltrating your engine cylinders and wearing them and other engine parts out.

Its Parts

An air cleaner assembly is made up of two primary components: an engine air filter and a housing. One may also come with a dedicated duct for drawing in either cool or warm air.

Where it's Located

If you're driving an older car, truck, or SUV, you should be able to find it above the carburetor or beside it. Otherwise, it should be beside or above the throttle body.

What They're Made of

Plastic or metal comprises most, and many have removable lids that are made of the same thing.

What Types There are

There are several.

Pleated paper. These are what most vehicles use, as they're designed for everyday driving. They're both easy to replace and also cost-effective.

Foam and cotton. Both of these are designed for sports cars and other performance vehicles. Foam air cleaner assemblies use oil-wetted polyurethane, and they're intended for use in motorsports, being long-lasting. Cotton air cleaner assemblies use oiled cotton gauze. Both provide exceptional airflow and have a high dirt-collection capacity.

Oil bath. These are used for off-roading, as their air filtration abilities are superior, owing to being composed of sumps with pools of oil, plus coarse insert materials like fiber, mesh, and foam.

How Long They Last

That depends on several factors. However, when to replace one is relatively straightforward: take care of it every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, according to the recommendations in most owner's manuals. Check your own for specifics. You can, of course, look for the symptoms of air cleaner assembly failure, too.

The Signs it's Time to Change One

They include:

  • Check Engine and other warnings on the dashboard
  • Ignition problems
  • Unusual engine noises
  • Worsening gas mileage

See any, and you should run an inspection. If it turns out that your assembly needs changing, be sure that, when you buy a new one, you get the genuine article.

Why Buy Genuine OEM Air Cleaner Assemblies vs. Aftermarket?

Mopar designs them compatible with your car, truck, and SUV brand and model specifically. Off-brands don't always -- and even if they claim to, fitment may be less reliable.
