How Can I Tell if My Vehicle's Water Pump is Bad?

The water pump -- whether in a Dodge Durango, a Jeep Grand Cherokee or otherwise, it's a critical part of the cooling system, whose process helps the engine stay at the right temperature to keep from overheating.

What the pump does, specifically, is move a combo of coolant (antifreeze) and water back and forth between the radiator and engine; it goes from the radiator through the engine, heating up as it goes, and then it returns to the radiator, where it cools off, and the process repeats.

It goes bad, though, and you'll know it from the signs:

A temperature and/or low coolant warning light on the dash

A loose pulley

Grinding noises while the engine runs

See these, and you should run a thorough inspection. If it turns out you need a new water pump, be sure to replace it ASAP to avoid overheats.

What Does Water Pump Replacement Cost on Average?

It can run between $720 or so and almost $900, but that varies by make and model. On a Durango, for instance, it can run anywhere from $700 to almost $850, while on a Grand Cherokee, you might be looking at anywhere from $580 or so to around $700.
