Why Does the Engine in My Dodge Monaco Stall All the Time?

If you're a big fan of the Blues Brothers and love watching old episodes of T.J. Hooker and Hill Street Blues, then there's a good chance you appreciate your Monaco. The unmistakable Dodge car had starring roles in the duo's movie and, indirectly, that classic TV, where its rebadged Plymouth Fury sibling lived in the limelight.

So, when its engine stops running right and starts stalling on the regular, it can put a damper on what's otherwise one cool ride. Luckily, there's a few simple explanations for why. Here's what to do about each.

1. Faulty Fuel System

If your Monaco has trouble starting, if its engine has begun sputtering or randomly surging, if it's losing power driving uphill, this is likely the problem. It's even more likely if there's a whining noise coming from the gas tank, the car's fuel economy is worsening, and you're getting a hot reading from the temperature gauge on your dash.

Inspect every part -- the carburetor or, if you've upgraded, the fuel injectors, the fuel filter, the fuel tank, and the fuel pump -- to figure out the exact problem, and replace as needed.

2. Bad Air Intake

If the car's idling high (in other words, if the engine revs too fast in both park and neutral) -- or, if its idle speeds have dramatically decreased -- the air intake is likely the problem. Better chances if the Check Engine light's lit up the dash.

Inspect everything from the intake manifold to its gaskets, and swap out the old for the new.

3. Ignition Failure

Problems starting, flickering dashboard lights, and a key that refuses to turn in the cylinder all tell you this is the likely problem. Inspect the system, including the ignition switch, ignition coil, and ignition lock cylinder, and make the changes you need to.
