What are Common Problems with a Chrysler LeBaron?

LeBaron -- a mainstay of the 1980s and 1990s. If you were a Chrysler enthusiast, you had one, or knew someone who drove one (and knew them well).

Now, you've got one, and it's a classic, one worth keeping in top condition. Do that, and it'll last you tens of years and hundreds of thousands of miles of pure pleasure to drive.

There're a few issues common to LeBaron you might run into from time to time, though. It's a good thing you came to us for advice on what to do about them, too; here's what to keep an eye out for.

Faulty Transmissions

Your LeBaron starting and then stalling, then unable to start up again? Maybe it gets stuck in second gear to boot? This is a known issue with models from between 1990 and 1995; a lot of cars with the problem have 100,000 miles or more on the odometer.

The culprit? A bad transmission control module (TCM). Of course, if your transmission's an automatic, it could be almost anything else. Either way, you'll have to either replace the TCM or rebuild the transmission itself.

Bad Oil System Parts

If the engine in your LeBaron is leaking oil, there's a good chance either the valve cover gaskets, the cam plugs on the back of the cylinder head, the cam seals, a front crankshaft seal, or the oil filter bracket needs to be replaced. This is commonest in models from '90 through '95 with around 100,000 miles clocked.

Failed Sensors

Your LeBaron has speed sensors on its auto transmission; they (both the input and output sensors, their connectors) can get damaged, making it so that you can't manage speed as well. This is common on models with 100,000 miles or more, from the early to mid-1990s. The sensors will need to be replaced.
