Your Chrysler Imperial Won't Start. Now What?

Imperial. One of the most reliable Chrysler cars ever built. One incomparably luxurious, a pure pleasure to drive -- and to ride in. So when it won't start -- when the engine won't even crank -- it can really put a damper on things.

You're in luck -- we know what the problem is, most likely. Here's a few possibilities, plus what to do if they end up realities.

Check the Battery

A dead battery's the problem most of the time. If the car won't start, or tries and fails, if it's slow to start, if it cranks and then dies, or if the lights don't turn on and the car doesn't chime when you open the door, it's practically a certainty. Even more likely, if the Check Engine light turns on, the battery's swollen (that's a hydrogen buildup), it smells like rotten eggs (that's a lead acid leak), or the terminals are corroded.

You can try jump-starting it, unless its damaged, but if that doesn't work, you'll have to replace it.

Inspect the Alternator

Alternator failure is fairly common. That happens, and it'll look like a dead battery, but the car's electrical systems -- things like the power windows, windshield wipers, electronics, instrumentation, and power steering -- won't run. Plus, you'll see battery and alternator warnings on the dash, the car lights will malfunction, the engine will squeak, and you'll smell burning smell around the battery or alternator. You might even see alternator fluid leaks.

The causes? Almost always bad parts, if not installing incompatible accessories or jump-starting wrong. Run an inspection; if you can't fix the problem, you'll need to replace the alternator.

Take a Look at the Starter

Bad starters are notorious. They're really easy to diagnose, though; look for damaged parts, corrosion on their terminals, and loose wiring. A faulty starter's even more likely if you turn the key in the ignition, and only the dash lights and displays come on, or if you can only start in certain gears or drive modes. That's the case, and it'll need replacement.
