What's This TPMS Warning Light on My Dash?

Picture it. Headed down the worst of the 202 in Phoenix in your Jeep Wrangler. You see a light come on the dash. Looks kind of like a tire (treads and everything), kind of like a horseshoe, bright yellow, and with an unmistakable exclamation point smack-dab in the middle. Maybe you've never seen it before. Panic sets in; what is it now?

Don't worry. It's just a warning or notification that something's up with your tire pressure monitor.

The job of a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is to let you know the tires on your SUV are low and need inflating. Put simply, it saves you the trouble of having to rely solely on a tire gauge to figure out how much air to put in them. Having a TPMS is a great way to help your tires last longer, too; after all, stay on top of proper inflation, and you can stay on top of tread wear and other potential tire damage-- especially from blowouts.

Here's all you need to know about the TPMS in your SUV (or any other Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, or RAM vehicle, for that matter) -- how it works, and what you should do when it shows up on the dash.

What's it Mean When the TPMS Stays On?

One of your tires has low pressure, though the light may not tell you which. You'll have to check them all with a gauge, figure out what's causing the pressure loss and either replace the tire (if it's bad) or add air -- whichever ends up the case.

What's it Mean When the TPMS is Only On Sometimes?

If the temperature where you live changes dramatically in a short time (for instance, overnight, when temps are generally cooler), the light might turn on and off (as air pressure changes along with the temp; on for low pressure, off when pressure's right again). Do the same thing as if the light were "stuck" on, just to be safe: check tire inflation with a gauge, and address any pressure loss or, say, tears or holes leaking air and leading to flats.

What's it Mean When the TPMS is Flashing?

If this happens for quite a while every time you start your Wrangler, and then the light stays on, it means the TPMS isn’t working right. That's bad news. You won't get an accurate read on tire pressure without it (unless you go through the hassle of constantly checking with that gauge). Again, check tire pressure and fix the problem (if a fix works and the light turns off again), but if nothing works and you're not sure what to do about it, contact a dealer (in this case, a Jeep dealer) or a certified Mopar service center. The pros will be happy to help.

Of course, if you need a replacement TPMS, for Wrangler or otherwise, we've got it (any tire accessories you need, too). It's genuine OEM, so top-quality and guaranteed to fit, and our prices are lower than MSRP. Plus, it's warranty-backed so you can buy with confidence.
