Change Timing Belts on RAM 1500: an Easy DIY

Now, think of that happening to that truck you love most of all -- your RAM 1500, one serious heavy-duty pickup to end up in an accident. And one sure to end up with huge repair bills for one.

You're in luck. If you're seeing these signs, usually, the problem's no more than a bad timing belt or timing chain (hopefully) -- a case of slippage, or worse, breakage. How important a working one is to an engine running as best it can -- it can't be understated. After all, timing belts help engine parts like the camshaft and crankshaft move in sync and precisely. They have to, actually, to make sure the engine's valves and pistons pump at the proper intervals. Because, when they don't, engine parts collide; the damage is often catastrophic.

The best way to avoid the worst? Change the timing belt during regular service. (Check your owner's manual for when that is.)

When to Replace a Timing Belt, and How

If you're driving a newer RAM 1500 model, it's likely about every 100,000 miles. If you're driving an older one, it may be every 60,000 miles or so. If your pickup's got a timing chain, though; they get built to last an engine's entire lifetime; you shouldn't have to replace it unless it breaks (and if it does, you'll hear a loud crack).

Just as luckily, the job's a straightforward one. All you usually need for it is a screwdriver set, a pry bar, some wrenches, any new water pump, oil seals, and gaskets, some adhesive, and an engine manual with torque and timing specs (in this case, one for a RAM 1500).
