Spoilers & Wings: What's the Difference?

Spoilers. These are the fins on the trunks or roofs of vehicles, usually. A car or SUV can have one on the roof, trunk, and/or rear (the last, called a lip spoiler). A truck, on the other hand, can have one over the bed or on the roof of the cab. Sports cars, on the other hand, can have them on the hood (these are called air dams) if they don't have, say, dynamically adjustable active ones on the trunk/rear.

Wings. These are larger versions of spoilers. Supercars and other performance vehicles generally have them -- either the whale-tail kind (also called a "tea tray"), with slightly raised and upswept edges, or the gurney-flap kind (also called wickerbill), with small, tabbed edges that point up even further. They're designed to dramatically increase downforce at high speeds specifically, adding stability and improving handling and making them great for racing on tracks.
