Serpentine Belts 101

The serpentine belt in a vehicle -- also called a drive belt, v-belt, vee belt, multi belt, or serp belt -- moves many different parts. Think the alternator, the power steering and water pumps, and the AC compressor, for instance, plus the air pump. It works with a crankshaft pulley and often runs alongside idler pulleys and/or belt tensioners.

One can go bad with age. Heat and friction, for instance, can wear it out. There are signs of this that you can look for. The obvious ones are cracking, fraying, and glazing on the belt. Others include loss of power steering control, air conditioner malfunctions, a dead car battery, an overheating engine, and engine accessories damage. You may also notice a sudden battery drain, a stalling engine, and a lit Check Engine light on the dash.

You can maintain your serpentine belt by doing a visual inspection during routine maintenance (check the belt every 10,000 miles, and look for stretching), and by listening for squeals or chirps (indicating slippage or the belt tensioner going bad). You should also test your power steering regularly for potential failure, plus check the belt tensioner for wear and check the engine pulley for breakage or failure (which can damage the belt). If the belt contacts coolant, oil, or power steering fluid, for instance, you should replace it, as this can also cause damage. Otherwise, change the belt every 50,000 to 100,000 miles.
