Mopar Brake Pads 101

What They are, What Types There are, and What They Do

They're the textured plates on the brake calipers in a vehicle's disc brake system. There are four kinds, generally: organic (for everyday use), metallic (i.e., semi-metallic, somewhat more durable), ceramic (a step up), and carbon-fiber (the most resilient, with the best stopping power). What they all do is contact and rub against the system's brake rotors. This produces the friction that the vehicle uses to slow down and stop.

The Signs They're Failing and When to Change Them

The latter depends on how you drive and where, but you should do so when you start to see certain symptoms. They include damages or worn-out surfaces, warped rotors, dashboard warning lights, whining noises, grinding, or vibration during braking, and longer-than-usual slowdown and stopping times.

See any of these, and you should perform an inspection and change whichever brake pads the results require. Otherwise, most owner's manuals recommend doing so every 40,000 to 50,000 miles or so. How to replace them is fairly simple, whether you drive a van like Chrysler Town & Country, a truck like Dodge RAM 1500 or RAM 2500, a Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV, or otherwise. Before you order anything new, though, be sure it's genuine.

Why Buy Genuine OEM Brake Pads vs. Aftermarket?

Mopar guarantees they'll be compatible with your make and model. After all, the manufacturer knows what'll fit best. Off-brands, however, can't always promise the, and even if they do, their brake pads may not work quite like factory replacements do.
